How to choose the right shoulder pad?
American football shoulder pads must offer a perfect balance between protection, comfort and freedom of movement . The choice of model depends mainly on your position, your body type and the level of protection sought.
A correctly chosen shoulder pad must remain perfectly in place during play while allowing a wide range of movement for running, throwing, blocking or tackling.
Choose your shoulder pad according to your position
Each position on the field requires a different level of protection and freedom of movement:
- QB / WR / DB (Skill positions)
Lightweight models favoring mobility, speed and range of movement. - RB / LB (All Purpose)
An ideal compromise between protection and agility for players exposed to frequent contact. - OL / DL (Lineman)
More robust shoulder pads designed to withstand repeated impacts during blocking and contact phases.
How to take your measurements?
1️⃣ Measure your chest measurement
Using a flexible tape measure, measure the circumference of your chest at the widest part. The tape should remain horizontal and should not be too tight.
2️⃣ Measure the width of your shoulders
Measure the distance between the ends of your two shoulders to obtain additional guidance for choosing a suitable size.
3️⃣ Consult the manufacturer's guide
Each brand and model has its own size chart. Refer your measurements to the guide available in the description of the shoulder pad in order to select the model corresponding to your body shape.
⚠️ Check the fit of your shoulder pad
Once your shoulder pad is worn, a few points are essential to ensure good support:
- The straps must be properly tightened on both sides and passed through the intended locations.
- The shoulder pad should be in contact with your body without creating excessive pressure.
- The foam protections located under the shoulder shells must be correctly positioned in relation to your arms.
- Your neck should be able to move freely and should not be hindered by the shoulder pad when wearing your helmet.
- The shoulder blades must be properly covered by the rear protectors.
- The sternum area must be protected by the central part of the shoulder pad.
