Choosing your child's first baseball bat sounds straightforward — but it is one of the most important decisions for their early development as a player. A bat that is too heavy or too long discourages the child, slows the swing, and creates bad hitting habits that are genuinely difficult to correct later. The right bat, on the other hand, produces a natural, fluid swing, more solid contact — and most importantly, the simple joy of playing the game.

Tee-Ball vs Coach Pitch: what is the difference?

Before choosing a bat, it helps to understand which level your child is playing at:

Tee-Ball (6U — ages 5 to 7) is baseball's entry level. The ball sits on a stationary tee and the child hits it with no pitcher involved. The only goal at this stage is to build the basic foundations of a swing, develop hand-eye coordination, and most importantly — fall in love with the sport. Tee-Ball bats are very light (drop -10 to -12), short (24 to 26 inches), and feature a small 2 1/4-inch barrel. They are certified USA Baseball or simply designed for non-competitive Tee-Ball play.

Coach Pitch (9U — ages 7 to 9) is the next step up: a coach or adult pitches the ball gently toward the batter. The child begins developing timing, pitch recognition, and coordination. Coach Pitch bats are slightly longer (27 to 30 inches) and available in drops of -9 to -11. Some leagues require USA Baseball or USSSA certification at this level — always check with the coach before purchasing.

Which drops for 6U-9U?

For Tee-Ball players aged 4 to 6, the ideal bat length sits between 24 and 26 inches at a weight of 12 to 14 ounces. From ages 7 to 9 (Coach Pitch), lengths progress toward 27 to 30 inches.

Drop -12 — the lightest option, ideal for the youngest Tee-Ball players (ages 5–6). A 24-inch bat in drop -12 weighs just 12 ounces (~340g) — practically nothing in a 5-year-old's hands. Allows the child to develop a fluid, natural swing without any effort or strain.

Drop -10/-11 — the most common drops at 9U and Coach Pitch level. Offer a good balance between lightness and the beginnings of swing feel and power. As the bat takes on a little more weight, the child starts to sense their swing and develop technique. Recommended for children aged 7 to 9.

Drop -9 — used at the end of the 9U category for the tallest and strongest players. Progressively prepares the child for the 12U category and the standard -10 drops of junior competitive play.

⚠️ This chart is a starting point. A child's build matters just as much as their age — a small 8-year-old may need a 27-inch bat rather than a 29-inch one. When in doubt, go shorter.

How to find the right bat length for your child

Two simple tests you can do at home before purchasing:

Method 1 — Chest test: stand the child upright with their arm extended at their side. Place the end of the bat at the centre of their chest. If their fingers comfortably reach the knob, the length is right.

Method 2 — Ground test: place the end of the bat on the ground next to the child's foot. If the knob reaches exactly to their wrist, the bat fits. If the knob extends past the wrist, go one size shorter.

When in doubt between two lengths, always choose the shorter bat for Tee-Ball and Coach Pitch players. A fast, controlled swing with a shorter bat builds far better technique than a slow, laboured swing with a bat that is too long.

What certification do 6U-9U bats need?

In youth leagues from 9U upwards, the USA Baseball standard applies. It ensures that metal bats perform closer to wood bats — keeping the game safe and skills-focused for developing players.

For Tee-Ball (6U), certification is not always required since there is no pitching involved. Simply ensure the bat is designed for Tee-Ball use and has a maximum barrel diameter of 2 1/4 inches.

For Coach Pitch (9U), always ask the coach which certification your league requires before purchasing. Some leagues require USA Baseball, others accept USSSA. A non-compliant bat will not be permitted in games regardless of its price or brand.

Practical advice for parents

Do not over-equip from day one. A well-fitted entry-level bat is always more effective for a young player than a premium bat that is too heavy or too long. The goal at 6U-9U is to build technique and confidence — not to hit the ball as hard as possible.

Check the certification with the coach before purchasing for any 9U competitive league. USA Baseball and USSSA are not interchangeable depending on the league format.

Think about lifespan realistically. Children grow fast — buying a bat that is too large "so they can use it for longer" is counterproductive for technical development. A well-fitted bat this season and a new one next season is always the better approach.

Check the grip size. Make sure the grip is not too thick for your child's small hands. An oversized grip prevents a proper hold and negatively affects swing control.
