Baseball and Softball Cleats: Which Type Should You Choose?
Choosing the right cleats is one of the most important decisions for a baseball or softball player. The outsole directly determines your traction at first step, your stability around the bases and your comfort over several hours of play. There are three main families of cleats, each suited to a player profile and surface type:
- Metal baseball and softball cleats: the reference for experienced players in competition. Metal spikes dig into natural grass and dirt for maximum traction. Permitted from high school level and in league play. Note: generally prohibited on synthetic turf surfaces.
- Molded baseball and softball cleats: plastic or rubber spikes moulded directly into the outsole. More versatile and more accessible, they suit training and competition on mixed surfaces. Ideal for beginner and intermediate players.
- Youth baseball cleats: designed specifically for young players, with soft moulded spikes and easy lacing systems. Protection and comfort adapted to children's builds.
Baseball Cleat Brands Available
- Nike: Flywire technology and lightweight outsoles for maximum reactivity. Nike baseball cleats are among the most worn in MLB and American leagues.
- Under Armour: durability and stability. Under Armour cleats are recognised for their lateral support, essential during rapid directional changes in the field.
- Mizuno: a historic brand in Japanese and American baseball. Mizuno combines traditional craftsmanship with technical innovation for cleats proven over decades on professional diamonds.
Baseball Cleats vs Softball Cleats: What Is the Difference?
Good news: the vast majority of the cleats we carry are compatible with both baseball and softball. Both sports are played on similar surfaces (grass, dirt) and require the same traction and support qualities. The main difference sometimes relates to the upper cut: some softball players prefer low-cut models for greater ankle mobility. Each product page specifies compatible disciplines.
How to Choose the Right Cleat Size?
- Measure your foot in the evening, when it is slightly swollen after a day of activity
- Allow approximately one centimetre between your toe and the end of the cleat
- Baseball cleats are worn with thick baseball socks — factor in this thickness when choosing your size
- Consult the size guide for each brand, available on the product pages
How to Care for Your Baseball Cleats
After each use, clean the spikes with a stiff brush to remove dirt and grass. For metal cleats, dry immediately and apply a light coat of oil to the spikes to prevent rust. For molded cleats, a rinse with clean water is sufficient. Never leave to dry in a closed bag: heat degrades adhesives and synthetic materials.
