Baseball pants: the complete buying guide
Baseball pants are not ordinary sports trousers. They are a technical garment engineered specifically for the demands of the game: explosive sprints between bases, repeated slides, the catcher's deep squat position, the pitcher's rotation and follow-through. Their construction — reinforced knees, elastic waistband with belt loops, abrasion-resistant fabrics — addresses real physical constraints that exist in no other team sport.
In France and across Europe, baseball pants are mandatory in all official competition under FFBS (Fédération Française de Baseball et Softball) regulations — they form part of the official uniform alongside the jersey and cap. In the United States, the same applies at every level from Little League through college (NCAA) to the MLB.
Baseball pants cuts: classic, tapered and knicker
The cut is the first decision to make. There are three main families of baseball pants, each corresponding to a different playing style and personal preference.
Classic cut (full length)
Full-length baseball pants reach down to the ankle and are traditionally worn with baseball socks pulled up over the shin — a style rooted in the tradition of early 20th century American baseball. This cut is the most common in both amateur and professional leagues in France and across Europe. It provides full leg protection during slides and a classic, authentic look that many players appreciate for its heritage. Length can be adjusted at the waistband or slightly cuffed according to preference.
Tapered cut
The tapered cut is the modern standard — the leg narrows toward the ankle, giving a streamlined, athletic profile. Hugely popular in NCAA collegiate leagues and among younger players who follow the trends of contemporary baseball, this cut shows off the cleats and creates a clean, modern silhouette. It also reduces excess fabric during sprints, which can marginally improve perceived speed and agility.
Knicker cut (3/4 length)
The knicker — also called 3/4 pants or old school pants — ends just below the knee and is worn with high baseball socks that cover the lower leg. This is the most traditional style in American baseball, directly linked to the golden eras of the sport. It is enjoying a strong revival in amateur leagues and is particularly valued for its authentic vintage look. It also offers maximum freedom of movement at the knee during slides and quick directional changes.
Game pants vs practice pants
Game pants
Game pants are engineered for official competition. They meet the regulatory requirements of governing bodies in terms of colourways (white at home, grey or team colour away) and fabric quality. Their construction is more refined — reinforced seams, integrated knee pads or double-layer knee reinforcement, robust elastic waistband with belt loops. The fabric is typically high-density polyester or a polyester/spandex blend to maximise freedom of movement.
Practice pants
Practice pants are more durable, more affordable, and built to withstand intensive daily use. They hold up to frequent washing without losing shape, handle repeated slides without deteriorating, and maintain their fit through daily training sessions. Many clubs keep a dedicated practice pant to preserve their game pants for competition days. Practice models are often available in a wider range of colourways with fewer regulatory constraints.
Baseball pants brands
Rawlings
Rawlings is the absolute reference in baseball equipment. Their pants are used by players at MLB level and in amateur leagues worldwide. The Rawlings range features high-performance technical polyester with double-layer knee reinforcements and a reinforced elastic waistband. Available in classic and tapered cuts, in white, grey and black.
Under Armour
Under Armour offers baseball pants with their HeatGear moisture management technology — ultra-lightweight and breathable fabric that wicks sweat to the exterior. Their models are particularly valued for comfort in warm conditions and intensive training sessions.
Marucci
Marucci, the MLB professionals' brand, produces premium baseball pants with exceptional construction detail — flat seams to prevent irritation, strategic reinforcements, premium fabric. The choice of the most demanding players.
Wilson
Wilson offers accessible and durable baseball pants, ideal for beginner players and clubs seeking excellent value for money. Available in white and grey, they deliver the essential characteristics of a solid game pant.
Official baseball colourways
Baseball is one of the most codified sports when it comes to uniform colours. The general rules in France, across Europe and in the United States are:
White — the home colourway. White pants have been the standard for home teams since the origins of the sport. They pair with the team's white jersey and coloured baseball socks.
Grey — the traditional away colourway. Visiting teams typically wear grey to distinguish themselves from the home team in white.
Black — popularised by certain MLB franchises (White Sox, Pirates), black is now accepted in many amateur leagues as an alternate colourway. It gives a modern, striking look and is particularly popular in youth teams.
Colours — some leagues and teams use coloured pants (blue, red) as alternate uniforms. Always check your league's regulations before purchasing.
Baseball pants size guide
Baseball pants are sized by waist circumference and inseam length. American sizing differs from European sizing — here is the complete guide:
Adult sizing (men and women)
| Waist circumference | US Size | EU approx. |
|---|---|---|
| 71–76 cm / 28–30" | XS / 28 | 36–38 |
| 76–81 cm / 30–32" | S / 30 | 38–40 |
| 81–86 cm / 32–34" | M / 32 | 40–42 |
| 86–91 cm / 34–36" | L / 34 | 42–44 |
| 91–96 cm / 36–38" | XL / 36 | 44–46 |
| 96–101 cm / 38–40" | 2XL / 38 | 46–48 |
| 101–106 cm / 40–42" | 3XL / 40 | 48–50 |
Youth sizing
| Approximate age | US Size | Waist circumference |
|---|---|---|
| 6–7 years | Youth XS | 56–60 cm / 22–24" |
| 8–9 years | Youth S | 60–64 cm / 24–25" |
| 10–11 years | Youth M | 64–68 cm / 25–27" |
| 12–13 years | Youth L | 68–72 cm / 27–28" |
| 14–16 years | Youth XL | 72–76 cm / 28–30" |
Sizing tip: baseball pants are cut with a slightly fuller fit than European sports trousers. If between two sizes, size down for a fitted game-day look or size up for more comfortable practice wear.
The baseball belt: an essential accessory
Baseball pants are designed to be worn with a belt — the belt loops are an integral part of the pant's construction. A baseball belt differs from a standard belt: it is wider (3.5 to 4 cm), stiffer, and available in team colours. It keeps the pants secure during slides and explosive movements, and forms part of the official uniform in regulated competition.

Women's baseball pants
Women's baseball in France and across Europe is growing rapidly, with organised women's leagues and championships in every region. Women's baseball pants feature a cut adapted to female morphology — slightly higher waist, more adjusted hips, flexible leg opening. They meet the same technical requirements as men's models: knee reinforcements, elastic waistband, breathable fabric.

Youth baseball pants
Young baseball players need pants specifically designed for their developing physique. Youth models carry the same technical features as adult versions — knee reinforcements, slide-resistant fabric, elastic waistband — in sizes designed for players from ages 6 to 16. All our youth models are available in white, grey and black to meet FFBS youth championship requirements.

How to care for your baseball pants
Stains on white baseball pants are inevitable — dirt, grass and clay are part of the game. Here is how to treat them effectively:
Dirt and mud stains: allow to dry completely, then brush off the excess before pre-treating with a synthetic fabric stain remover. Machine wash at 30°C.
Grass stains: treat with soap or a dedicated stain remover before washing. Diluted hydrogen peroxide can help with stubborn stains on white fabric.
Machine washing: maximum 30°C on a gentle cycle, inside out. Never use bleach on coloured pants (grey, black) — use sparingly on white only.
Drying: air dry where possible. Low-heat tumble drying is acceptable but may cause very slight shrinkage over time.
