This is the first decision to make before purchasing an aluminum bat.

The one-piece bat is manufactured as a single unit from the grip to the end of the barrel. Its full rigidity allows maximum energy transfer at the point of contact — no energy is lost through a joint or connector. This is the preferred choice for power hitters who want the highest possible exit velocity. The trade-off is that vibrations from off-center hits (mishits) are felt more strongly in the hands. The two-piece bat features an aluminum barrel connected to a handle — often made from composite or a different alloy grade — via a connector piece. Bat certifications: BBCOR, USSSA, and USA Baseball explained

This is the single most important factor to verify before purchasing. Using a non-certified bat in official competition results in immediate disqualification.

BBCOR (.50) — mandatory in high school (NFHS) and collegiate (NCAA) play in the United States, and required for Senior (18U and above) competition in most European national leagues including France. BBCOR measures the bat's trampoline effect and limits it to .50, giving aluminum bats a feel and performance closer to wood. Required drop: -3. Maximum barrel diameter: 2 5/8 inches.

USSSA (1.15 BPF) — the most widely used certification in amateur baseball and travel ball leagues worldwide. BPF (Bat Performance Factor) measures the speed at which the ball exits the barrel. USSSA bats are more performant than BBCOR bats because they allow a higher trampoline effect. Available in drops of -5, -8, -10 depending on age category. Barrel diameter up to 2 3/4 inches for 12U and below.

USA Baseball — an intermediate certification used in community and school leagues in the United States and in some youth leagues in France and Europe. It allows lighter bats (-10, -11, -12) while limiting performance to a level closer to wood. Always confirm with your club or league before purchasing.

How to choose the right bat length

Bat length is measured in inches from the knob to the end of the barrel. A bat that is too long slows your swing speed and reduces precision; too short, and you sacrifice reach and power.

Simple test: place the end of the bat at the centre of your chest with your arm extended. If your fingers comfortably reach the knob, the length is right for you.

• Age 8–9 → 26–28 inches

• Age 12–13 → 29–31 inches

Never use a baseball-certified bat to hit softballs — softball balls are heavier and can permanently dent the barrel. Avoid hitting in temperatures below 10°C (50°F): aluminum becomes more brittle in cold weather and is more susceptible to flat spots. Clean the grip and barrel regularly with a damp cloth. Store the bat away from hard impacts and never use it as a prop or lever — this permanently deforms the barrel and voids any warranty.
